Celebrating America’s Independence

Before the ink was dry on the Declaration of Independence, America’s future hung on a knife’s edge. 1776, the Tony Award-winning musical by Sherman Edwards and Peter Stone, takes us inside the hallowed halls of Philadelphia in one of the most defining moments in history. With humor, passion, and drama, we see John Adams’ relentless drive to secure independence clash with the doubts and hesitations of his fellow delegates. Benjamin Franklin lends wit and wisdom, Thomas Jefferson wrestles with words and conscience, and the entire Congress faces impossible questions about liberty, compromise, and the cost of freedom.

Set to a bold and memorable score, 1776 reminds us that democracy has always been contentious, messy, and worth fighting for. In celebration of 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, this community outreach production features cameo appearances by local Frederick luminaries.

Support the Weinberg

The Weinberg Center is an institution of value to Frederick. It is a vital part of the economic life of Downtown Frederick, attracting more than 85,000 patrons annually who visit shops, restaurants, and local stores. Furthermore, the Weinberg provides educational programs to over 8,000 Frederick county school children each year. And the Weinberg continues to bring world-class performing artists to the heart of downtown Frederick for our community to enjoy. We are committed to keeping ticket prices affordable for our community. So to cover the costs of the arts we present, the Weinberg — like theaters nationally — must find other sources of support. Please consider making a contribution to this historic theater.
