Not Your Typical Weinberg Intern

By: Mark Amberg

The Weinberg Center offers many opportunities for students and adults to become involved in the Arts here in Frederick.  As a resident of Frederick and a Weinberg member I have enjoyed many performances in this beautiful, historic theater.  As a performer, I have even had the pleasure of performing live on the Weinberg Stage several times.  And now as I embark on the latest phase of my life, I have become the Weinberg Center’s newest intern!

I am a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA and a recently retired elementary school vocal/general music teacher who has played guitar, keyboards and sang in many bands.  I know it may seem strange for a retired public-school educator with a master’s degree in school administration (from Hood College) to want to be an intern, but I am always looking for ways to give back to my community and I enjoy learning new things.

Volunteering as an intern at the Weinberg provides the opportunity to help an organization that I have treasured for many years, while offering me the opportunity to work the other side of the house and learn all about the work that goes on to keep a theater like this going.  I am amazed how so many quality programs are produced by our hard-working, multi-talented staff and made possible through the support of our members.

As a proud Weinberg Center member myself, I have been happy to support the Weinberg and its programming  as well as enjoy the early access to ticket sales that membership provides.  In my new role as intern, I was honored to help at the recent Tivoli Society annual appreciation reception and had the pleasure of meeting many of those who have really been the backbone of making the Weinberg Center for the Arts “The Jewel of Frederick”!

I have lived in downtown Frederick with my wife for the last 6 years and always enjoy meeting new friends and learning about others who live in our city.  So feel free to stop me and say “hi” if you see me at the theater or walking the streets of downtown Frederick.  Hope to see you at the theater soon!
